A Madison Christmas
by Bonnie Helander - posted 12/17/11

Madison, Georgia is one of the most charming towns in the country with a large historic district, filled with antebellum homes. General Sherman bypassed the town because of a gentlemen’s agreement he had with Joshua Hill, a retired US Senator from Madison and Union sympathizer. Because of this happy chance, we can all enjoy the impressive historic homes – from large, stately mansions to small Victorian cottages.

The Historic District is decked out right now for Christmas. The decorations are very southern and somewhat restrained. Most of the homes favor natural evergreen wreaths, swags and bright red bows. These simple elements really set off the architectural features and the white paint. Most homes also fly an American flag – a nice patriotic touch.

My husband and I recently stopped in Madison on our way back from visiting our son and his wife who live near Augusta. It was a perfect warm, sunny day, more reminiscent of spring then December. We strolled through the Historic District and enjoyed viewing the homes spruced up for the holidays. We shamelessly peeked through many fences to see the gardens beyond! Many of the gardens still have something in bloom, especially Camellia sasanqua and several of the larger estates have intricate boxwood parterres. Here is a sampling of how they decorate the historic homes and gardens in Madison for the holidays.

A picture-perfect morning and a home that takes your breath away decked out with wreaths, swags and bright red bows!

Most homes, whether a large mansion or small cottage, have a white picket fence with wreaths hung on the gate. Notice the live Christmas tree on the upper porch.

Another view of this magnificent estate

A smaller cotttage with cozy front porch with wreaths hung in the windows - all understated but gorgeous!

I peeked through the fence and saw this amazing potting shed in the garden also festooned with evergreen wreaths and bows - so charming!

Another lovely garden still in bloom in December with bright red front door

This sweet rose was just along a fence line.

Can't identify which holly this is but what a fabulous addition to the garden during the holidays!

Cheerful wreaths were hung along every fence line.

Another gate decked out for the holidays.

Not all the owners held to the subtle, restrained southern decorating traditions - these pink flamingos with santa hats really made me smile!

Make it a goal to visit Madison when you are out our way - it just an hour east of Atlanta on I-20.

What a charming town. Thanks for the tour. And that's a potting shed I could really get into!

Yes, I was really coveting that potting shed myself! You can't see it in the picture but near the shed was a nice vegetable garden filled with cool season veggies and lots of bird houses and feeders. Thanks for reading.
