I am an avid (addicted) gardener who lives in zone 8b/9. I got the gardening bug when I bought my house in 2005. There were just a few azaleas growing onto the house and not much else. Starting with a blank slate, I planted my first bed in the spring of 2006 and that's all I needed to begin a marathon of bed building throughout my yard. My goal is to create a "park-like" atmosphere - a place to escape and appreciate all that a garden offers. I'm looking to create some type of diary on the progression of my garden and share my gardening experiences. The good, the bad and the ugly!

August And Everything After
by Jason Redmon - posted 08/23/11

I'm convinced that August in Louisiana is like January in Montana. You can do nothing! I have done very little in the garden this month. I never did really care for the month of August and now that I'm a full-fledged gardener, it has become more unlikable. The plants and myself are just maintaining existence by pushing through the heat and looking forward to the months to come. Nice fall weather.  Ahhhh!

For the last few weeks I have been on and on about how bad the garden looks and how I'm ready to move stuff around and blah blah blah.  I've been hatin' on it!  That being said, I now need to make a formal apology to my garden. After reviewing the pictures I took yesterday, I now realize it doesn't look so bad. Especially for August heat and very little rain.

So for now, I guess I will just sit in my air conditioning, keep looking at these pictures and dream about everything I can and will do in the coming months.

Back garden- Off the deck.  Stella's grass patch and burr oak.

Back garden- Sweet olive and burr oak in back. 'Mrs. B.R. Cant' old garden rose in forefront on left.

Back garden-  The fountain bed.

Front garden.  Still blooming in the face of adversity.

Front garden-  I still have daylilies blooming. A few years ago I purchased the Crescendo collection from White Flower Farms. This collection is a variety of daylilies that bloom at different times. Some start as early as April 1st and some are still blooming as late as August 31st. So you get months of daylily blooms. It has been awesome. You should check their website if your interested. Also, the fall is an awesome time to plant them. They will be good and ready to put on a show next spring.
