I’m Misti Schaefer. I started out as a stay-at-home mom. When my children were very young I wanted a space for them to play and learn about nature. In my personal garden I propagated and nurtured every different plant I could get my hands on. I reduced an entire acre of turf into a lawn that could fit in the back of a pickup truck. The plan was for me to return to nursing school when my youngest started kindergarten. Never one to follow the planned path, I put my baby in preschool and went to study landscaping instead. In college, I was elected vice president by my entirely male class, earned seven scholarships and a very coveted internship in Washington D. C.

I have studied gardens and landscaping in nine different states, given several speeches and even hosted a few workshops on landscaping and gardening. I have earned two degrees and hold two licenses in the landscape field.

Daily, I work in a garden center giving advice and confidence to new gardeners and inspiring experienced ones, and as a gardening consultant and landscape designer in my spare time. I live in a jungle of my own making with two wonderful boys, the most patient man who ever walked on two legs, a dog, cat and more weeds than I could ever pull alone.

You Might Be A Plant Enthusiast If…
by Misti Schaefer - posted 09/22/11

Jeff Foxworthy made millions on his you might be a redneck observations.  I have been working on some observations about plant people myself.  I call myself a plant enthusiast.  My husband says I should star in season one of ‘Plant Hoarders’.  My mom calls it schizophrenic gardening. Maybe you can relate.

Have you ever…

  • Bought plants on a payment plan
  • Been excited to receive mulch as an anniversary gift
  • Brought home “pinches” of plants you were never invited to pinch
  • Carried a shovel in the trunk of your car and a vase for cuttings in your glove box at all times
  •  Stopped at a complete stranger’s house because you saw they were growing a plant you wanted
  • Visited a cemetery to check out the plants that were surviving there
  • Tried to root anything bought from a grocery store

I am guilty of all of this and more.  I am going to keep working on this list, and hopefully you will help me add to it.  I am going to spend time on here talking about plants I love, plants I wish I could grow and crazy things that have happened in my back yard, and hopefully answering some questions.  I hope you will come back and see me, because if you answered yes to even one we have lots to talk about!
